Week 6 Vocabuly Definitions & Examples

Domestic-of or pertaining to the home.
Ex. She wanted a domestic animal for her birthday but her dad bought her a polar bear instead.

Despite (preposition) -to anger or annoy (someone) out of spite. Ex. Despite the loss of her driver's license, she could still get to school on time with her bus pass.

Dimension- a property of space.
Ex. When we bought new carpet, we determined the dimensions of the room were 14x18 feet.

Civil (adj)-

(Civil rights movement was a long time ago.)
Synonyms - public, government, public, courteous, civic
Word Forms - civilian (adj, n), civilization (n)

Debate (n, v)-

(These people are debateing about whos taller.)
Synonyms - discussion, dispute, argument, argue, oppose, refute

Confer (v)-

(They are confering about what law to enforce.)

Week 5 Vocabulary Definitons & Examples.

Civil- pertaining to, or consisting of citizens.
Ex. Tom and Jane were married in a civil ceremony because they were not religious.

Debate- a discussion, as of a public question in an assembly, involving opposing viewpoints.
Ex. There has been very little public debate about teenager's rights in the classroom.

Confer (v) - to consult together
Ex. In court, Frank leaned over and conferred with his attorney about a statement the witness said

Kite Running

1. Kite-running is a two-person affair, with one person called the “charka gir” and
the other called the “gudiparan baz." Kite flyers stand on tops of buildings, fighting with kites from all
over the city.

2. Kite-running (Gudiparan Bazi) has been a favorite pastime in Afghanistan for
the last 100 years, but there are few on the streets of Kabul that can forget the
terror of living under the Taliban regime for so many years.

3. Beacuse i think the Tiliban didnt belive in kite running.

4. It helps us teach us that if you try at anything that you can do it.

Pashtuns and Hazaras in Afghanistan

1. What percentage of the population do Pashtuns and Hazaras make up in Afghanistan?
A: Afghanistan constituting about 45% of the population.

2. Where do Pashtuns mainly live? What language do they speak?
A: Pashtuns live scattered among other ethnic groups in much of the rest of the country, especially in the northern regions and in the western. They speak Pashtu.

3. Where do Hazaras mainly live? What language do they speak?
A: They live in mountains, in huts. They speak Hazaras.

4.What effect did the Soviet Invasion of 1979 have on the Pashtun/Hazara ethnic groups?
A: They both had different religions belives.
